How has backpacking changed since the first hippies went in search of enlightenment, mind-altering drugs and someone with a compatible star sign?

And does the old adage 'Take only photographs, leave only footprints' still apply when my tuk-tuk driver is on Facebook?

More than footprints? - a 40,075km journey ONTO the backpacker trail in search of sustainable travel

Overland across asia from the well-trodden beaches of Goa to some of the latest colonies of the 'are-we-there-yet?-set' visiting NGOs and talking to local people in india, thailand, laos, vietnam, cambodia, malaysia, singapore, indonesia, australia, fiji, the usa and the uk to find out what we as backpackers are doing right, what we're doing wrong and how we can make a more positive contribution those places we visit.

566,000 backpackers visited
Australia last year...

...spending US$2.5 billion
between them!

Backpacking has grown way
beyond its hippy trail origins!

when we're travelling in such numbers, how 'independent' or 'budget' can we really claim to be?!

Everywhere you find backpackers you'll find organisations and individuals working to limit our combined cultural, economic, environmental and social impact and this september more than footprints? is a journey onto the beaten track to talk to them.

his september he'll once again be leaving the comfort of his beard to join the backpacker exodus in search of sustainable backpacking. Over the next few weeks he'll be compiling all his research for the trip on the site.
